Press Release: Research and innovation – the last straw for a new Euro-Mediterranean partnership

Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, welcomed yesterday in the European Parliament the decisive progress on partnership in research and innovation in the Mediterranean area ( PRIMA ). This partnership, which is being voted on by MEPs today, aims to develop innovative solutions for sustainable water management and food production in the region. Commissioner Moedas said yesterday in Strasbourg plenary and said: “With the green light of the Parliament, PRIMA will be able to elaborate solutions essential to the severe shortages of water and food in the most affected regions of the Mediterranean zone , Respond to the most essential needs and thus act on one of the root causes of immigration. This Euro-Mediterranean partnership for research and innovation is a unique opportunity for EU Member States and Mediterranean third countries to pool their resources and work for the future of the region. PRIMA is also an excellent example of the opening up of European research and innovation to the world, and that is why I am pleased that this vote is taking place as quickly. ” The proposal to establish PRIMA was presented by The Commission on 18 October 2016. The partnership already includes nineteen countries which will contribute to the financing of PRIMA in addition to a contribution from the EU, European Union program of almost € 200 million through the Horizon 2020 framework program. Following Parliament’s agreement, the Council should formally finalize the legislative process on 26 June. Once adopted, the partnership will begin in 2018 for a period of ten years.
